Text With Variants
Drop dead Stanley, lay down in that gutter that has stained your wings. You think you are brave enough to be chasing the dragon down these streets. And she points a finger both glorious and horrible like a very long novel. You met God, she said, and you kicked his horn rims in, and tho’ he is a holy man he was not at all impressed. The world is a lonely place when you see everything never looking up. Be careful or you’ll miss the fancy animals dancing in the woods. And she vanished but not before I told her that she looks like Madonna with her eyes torn out. I was around when she was invented, and though I may have ached for hours it was the subjugation of the text that stressed me in the end.
We could indulge in the pleasures God has with his dogs at heel, like the matador who with santa’s pants fights the multicultural beast. We could sniff fertilizer together, plant the seeds of giant trees beneath the freeway, tell obscene jokes on the journey that expose the cutup underbelly of the infant Intellect.
Protect Her! They have already sent back the assassins. I see them now with their bounty of pills and they approach with several tempting liquors.
A Stranger tells of Helen
A stranger in a doorway waiting, his obvious involvement in the cruelties of life evident lent me a cigarette, coughed gently and said:
-I left her, my Helen, in the Troy of my bare rented room. Was so lonely on the bus today that I cried.
Through the window, steamed by breathing, upon which I had written - Give me an urban mercy from the tongue of a silver trumpet o all ye heartless! I saw, sitting like Buddha on a war monument, a smiling child plucking a pigeon.Son, there are thunders in a thousand parts of me and I am living in dread of the rain. Or another way to explain this would be, there are winged amphibious creatures sculpting tear urns in the pale amphitheater of my heart. And when there is nothing left, various scraps of marble, the devils lexicon, dried fruit, nerves entwined in a fitful ballet, only then will I allow myself to love again.
