Untitled Situation Piece

Untitled Situation Piece
from The Courier Mail 10.05.2004 pge 13

I lost my keys on Bowen Terrace
the very street where the chaingangs went
early last century the foreman leading on
his horse shouting at the laggers, most likely
ill than lazy. Like the cast out now, on the
corners and in the doorways that I pass
carefully retracing every step up Brunswick
street, until I find them on the counter in
the Nightowl. Those men in shackles who
also prayed for keys were never this lucky,
you could feel their souls in the old hotels
before the wrecking crews moved in.
